OSCAR(R)-winning actress Meryl Streep (IT'S COMPLICATED, DOUBT, MAMMA MIA!) stars as Margaret Thatcher in this surprising and intimate portrait of the first and only female Prime Minster of the United Kingdom. Smashing through the barriers of gender and class, Thatcher is arguably one of the 20th century's most influential women. THE IRON LADY weaves the intricacies of Thatcher's personal life with her policy decisions, focusing on the price that she paid for power.

The sharp economy of Lloyd's direction allows the incontestably great Streep to take impressionistic snatches of a life and build a woman in full. This is acting of the highest order.

The wonder and terror of Meryl Streep's performance in The Iron Lady is her formidable ability to nail the disheartening talents of not just Margaret Thatcher, but so many conservative politicians like her, who have a tremendous knack for changing minds and beckoning cheers while underlining their own rigid ignorance.

It's hard to rationalize the vision of this dotty elderly woman with the tough-minded politician. The story lacks insight, glosses over key political issues and is unworthy of Streep's masterful performance.

The film catches her long after she's left the public eye, and rather than an examination, or an assessment, of her politics, it instead offers up an affecting if not always satisfying portrait of the strong-willed leader humbled by age.

Despite the story's conceit of placing the viewer inside Thatcher's head, she never feels like a real person - but this is more the fault of Morgan's script than Streep's typically studied performance, much of it buried under prosthetics.

Strangely, this Thatcher biopic might have been far more worthwhile if it wasn't about Thatcher: The aged, dotty stranger hanging out with her dead husband is a more compelling subject.

You are left with the impression of an old woman who can't quite remember who she used to be and of a movie that is not so sure either.

First Look at Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady
Posted on 2011-07-08 by ChrisThe Iron Lady would be the perfect title for a female version of Iron Man, but it's actually the title for Meryl Streep's new biopic about Margaret Thatcher, U.K.'s first female prime minister.
The first trailer for the movie just hit the web and it playfully draws out the surprise of seeing what Streep looks and sounds like portraying the famous head of state.
Portraying real people is Streep's specialty. Her last Oscar nod came from her portrayal of Julia Child in Julie & Julia. The Iron Lady is being directed by Phyllida Lloyd, who previously directed Streep in Mama Mia!.
Here's a synopsis:
The Iron Lady is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher, the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. One of the 20th century's most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world.
2012 Oscars: We Predict the 10 Best Picture Nominees
Posted on 2011-11-10 by reelzThe Oscars are still months away, but that doesn't mean we don't already have a surprisingly good idea what voters will be picking. A few of these pictures have already been released, but as usual most of the real front-runners have been kept for the final weeks of the year. The assumption is that voters usually choose whatever happened to be the last flick they saw in theaters (which, sadly, seems to be true in quite a few cases). The expanded Academy Awards Best Picture category once again means that up to 10 movies may be nominated.
We've made our predictions about which 10 movies will get Best Picture nominations, and ordered the list by likelihood of winning. We also pick five more that we think won't quite make the cut.
Meryl Streep's The Iron Lady Trailer Released
Posted on 2011-11-14 by LindseyThe first trailer has been released for, The Iron Lady, a British political biopic about the United Kingdom's first (and thus far, only) female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. Portrayed by Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada, Julie and Julia) , co-starring Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge, Gangs of New York), and directed by Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia, Gloriana), The Iron Lady tells the story of how a woman pushed through the barriers of a male-dominated world and made sure her voice was heard.
Told from the view point of Lady Thatcher, the movie takes an intimate look at how power has it's price, especially for a British woman in the 1980's. Streep worked extensively on this role, being an American playing an important British woman, even going to the extent of sitting in on a House of Parliment Session in London to properly prepare for her depiction of the former prime minister.
Due out in American theaters December 2011, The Iron Lady is just in the nick of time for The 2012 Oscars.
For Your Consideration: The Newest Trailer for The Iron Lady
Posted on 2011-12-08 by MandyThe first trailer for The Iron Lady focused on the period elements of the biopic and the historical events that took place during Margaret Thatcher's time in office. The second trailer, on the other hand, does all but suggest that stars Meryl Streep and Jim Broadbent make some room on their awards shelf for one more Oscar. Even the backing music is more reminiscent of an Awards-show clip than it is of a main-stream trailer.
The moments we see in the trailers are impressive, as Streep is nearly unrecognizable in terms of both her physical appearance and her voice. She naturally transforms right before our eyes into the former British Prime Minister. Broadbent, meanwhile, appears to be made for the role of Denis Thatcher. Perhaps making room for another statuette or two might not be a bad plan, after all.
