When it's done right, as it is in Young Adult, there is something absolutely mesmerizing about watching a train wreck unfold on screen. When the wreck in question is a narcissistic beauty played to scheming, sour, downward-spiraling perfection by Charlize Theron, cringing is definitely called for, but so is laughter.

...might be brushed off as curdled rom-com were it not for two things. The first is the depth of Theron's performance...The second, less predictable aspect is the utter absence of the corny rehabilitation found in Juno and Reitman's glib, downsizing dramedy Up in the Air.

...in its uncompromising treatment of a character who's troubled but also a stone-cold bitch, Young Adult offers compassion for rather than revenge on the "psycho prom queen" who has nothing left in life but a warped mix-tape from an ex who moved on long ago.

In this tale of stunted development, Theron is a comic force of nature, giving her character considerable density and humanity despite her monstrous aspects.

...Cody and Reitman prove a canny team when it comes to capturing frank yet polished modernity, getting at truths of the here and now even if a certain excess of gloss denies them the full Americana humanism of someone like Alexander Payne.

...more like a snapshot than a full canvas, the tart, abrasive character study features strong performances from Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt.

Cody would likely acknowledge she's working through her own contradictory feelings toward her protagonist - and that she may have been a draft or two away from shaping those feelings into a terrific black comedy, rather than a pretty interesting one.

First Teaser Poster for Jason Reitman's Young Adult Starring Charlize Theron
Posted on 2011-09-06 by RyanTHR has revealed the first teaser poster for Paramount Pictures' Young Adult, the second collaboration between screenwriter Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman. Their previous movie, 2007's Juno, won Cody an Oscar and Reitman his first Academy Award nomination.
Young Adult stars Charlize Theron as an alcoholic, teen fiction writer who returns to her hometown in Minnesota to rekindle a romance with an old boyfriend (Patrick Wilson), who is now happily married. There, she runs into another former high school classmate (Patton Oswalt), who also has had a tough time letting go of the past. A photo of Theron in character was released by the studio a few weeks ago.
Opening December 16, Paramount is likely hoping that Young Adult captures the Academy's attention the way Juno did, perhaps awarding Theron with a nomination for what looks like the kind of image-shattering turn that won the actress her Oscar for 2003's Monster (only, Young Adult is probably funnier). Expect a trailer to arrive soon.
First Young Adult Trailer Shows Charlize Theron Behaving Badly
Posted on 2011-10-07 by RyanThe first poster for Paramount Pictures' upcoming comedy Young Adult was released last month, and, as predicted, the first trailer has arrived a month later via Slashfilm.
Like some of the more successful comedies of the summer (Bad Teacher or Bridesmaids) Young Adult is a movie about a questionably moral person engaging in questionably moral activity, only, in this case, the lead character is one whose lack of morals aren't really in question. More is explained in the movie's official synopsis.
Academy Award winner Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate (Patton Oswalt) who hasn’t quite gotten over high school, either.
2012 Oscars: We Predict the 10 Best Picture Nominees
Posted on 2011-11-10 by reelzThe Oscars are still months away, but that doesn't mean we don't already have a surprisingly good idea what voters will be picking. A few of these pictures have already been released, but as usual most of the real front-runners have been kept for the final weeks of the year. The assumption is that voters usually choose whatever happened to be the last flick they saw in theaters (which, sadly, seems to be true in quite a few cases). The expanded Academy Awards Best Picture category once again means that up to 10 movies may be nominated.
We've made our predictions about which 10 movies will get Best Picture nominations, and ordered the list by likelihood of winning. We also pick five more that we think won't quite make the cut.
New Poster and Three Preview Clips for Young Adult Starring Charlize Theron
Posted on 2011-11-15 by RyanA new poster and three preview clips have arrived online for the upcoming dark comedy Young Adult, from the writer-director team of Juno, Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman.
Young Adult stars Academy Award winner Charlize Theron (Monster) as the extremely unlikeable, teen fiction writer Mavis Gary, who returns to her hometown to reclaim her now happily married high school boyfriend (Patrick Wilson).
Already receiving Oscar buzz, the three clips from Young Adult show that the success or failure of the movie and its possible nominations rests on how audiences embrace Theron's Mavis, described as "the girl you hated in high school."
Red Band TV Spot for Young Adult Spills on Charlize Theron
Posted on 2011-11-29 by RyanWe've already seen three preview clips of the upcoming dark comedy Young Adult, and they've all shown the dark side of Academy Award winner Charlize Theron's (Monster) unlikeable character, Mavis Gary. This newly released red band TV spot shows just how nasty the teen fiction writer can get once she returns to her hometown to reclaim her now happily married high school boyfriend (Patrick Wilson).
Young Adult won't be released until next month, but is already receiving plenty of Oscar buzz due to the pairing of Theron with Oscar-nominated director Jason Reitman (Juno, Up In the Air) and Academy Award–winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno). While we doubt this decidedly NSFW TV spot will be used as an Oscar clip, it does show that Young Adult is potentially a very entertaining movie with a great performance from Theron, whose Mavis is not someone you want to spill a drink on.
