"Academy Award nominees Annette Bening and Julianne Moore star in this funny, smart and vibrant portrait of a modern American family. Nic (Bening) and Jules (Moore) are your average suburban couple raising their two teens, Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and Laser (Josh Hutcherson), in Southern California. But when the kids secretly track down their "donor dad," Paul (Mark Ruffalo), an unexpected new chapter begins for everyone as family ties are defined, re-defined and then re-re-defined. Fall in love with the big-hearted comedy that critics are calling "one of the best films of the year!" (Michael Phillips, At the Movies)"

I don't know what's more delightful ? that The Kids Are All Right stars Bening, Moore, and Ruffalo at the top of their games in an irresistible story of lesbian marriage, sperm-donor fatherhood, sex, red wine, and teen angst. Or that this warm, funny, sexy, smart movie erases the boundaries between specialized ''gay content'' and universal ''family content'' with such sneaky authority.

...so canny in its insights and so agile in its negotiation of complex emotions that it deserves to stand on its own. It is outrageously funny without ever exaggerating for comic effect, and heartbreaking with only minimal melodramatic embellishment.

Whatever your politics, between peerless performances, lyrical direction and an adventurous script, this is the sort of pleasingly grown-up fare all too rare in the mainstream daze of this very dry summer.

An otherwise conventional romantic comedy centering on the mid-life parenting issues of a long-time lesbian couple, this love letter to gay-marriage supporters is respectably entertaining filmmaking, it's just not exceptional.

...is alright, if not up to the level of writer-director Lisa Cholodenko's earlier pair of new bohemian dramas, High Art and Laurel Canyon.

2010 Summer Movie Guide

Posted on 2010-05-04 by reelz

When it comes to the mix of movies being offered up, not much has changed since we previewed Summer 2010 blockbusters back in September 2009. The season is still packed with sequels, remakes, comic book adaptations, and 3-D.

Meaning, fans of action/adventure movies (11), comedies (8), and chick flicks (9) are in luck, as are parents looking for a way to entertain the kids (10). But the pickings are slim for horror fans (3) and those looking for some summer drama (6) or thrilling intrigue (5). Check 'em all out in our 2010 Summer Movie Guide.

Director Lisa Cholodenko Explains the Family Issues and Porn Problems of The Kids Are All Right

Posted on 2010-07-07 by Ryan

Since she made her debut with 1998's High Art, director Lisa Cholodenko has been on a mission to tell personal, family-oriented dramas, continuing with 2002's Laurel Canyon and the upcoming comedy-drama, The Kids Are All Right. Kids tells the story of two mothers (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore) whose 18-year-old daughter (Alice in Wonderland's Mia Wasikowska) decides to make contact with the sperm donor (Mark Ruffalo) that is the father to her and her brother (Josh Hutcherson). Usually the sole screenwriter on her movies, Kids marks the first time Cholodenko has co-written a screenplay (with Stuart Bluberg). Cholodenko told ComingSoon that bringing Bluberg onto the project helped give the story a more personal angle, the continuing hallmark of her directorial work.
