...never lets banter, visual gags, or the usual manic kid-flick running about interfere with its more delicately handled thoughts on loyalty, longing, broken relationships, and generational continuity. It honestly earns its emotion, moment by painstakingly executed moment.

Impossible as it may seem, this anticipated sequel that was roughly 11 years in the making soars as high as its animated brethren, once again transporting lucky audiences to infinity and beyond.

...by creating the emotions we have always counted on and so rarely find anymore, this film becomes the kind of love note to movies we want and need.

Identifying with plastic figures has always been essential to the series' playfully perverse, aptly adolescent allure, but here, that empathy mutates into macabre existentialist dread. How many kids' movies lead their protagonists to the precipice of a flaming pit of hell?

It might no longer be the sparkling new thing on the block, but Toy Story 3 still has a few fresh tricks up its warm, fuzzy sleeve.

Though uneven and less witty than the first two, Toy Story 3 delivers quite enough in two dimensions.

...a jolly, slapstick comedy, lacking the almost eerie humanity that infused the earlier Toy Story sagas, and happier with action and jokes than with characters and emotions.

Whereas Toy Story 2 treated auds to a character-based sequel that handily justified its existence, this tertiary adventure delivers welcome yet nonessential fun, landing well after its creators have grown up and succeeded toying with more sophisticated stories.

Pixar Grows Waaaay Up

Posted on 2007-06-12 by reelz

Pixar's core demographic may skew a little older than usual come 2009.

According to Variety, Pixar announced their next project, titled Up. The story centers around a 70-year-old man who joins a park ranger in an epic battle against an array of evil villains and monsters.

Peter Doctor (Monsters, Inc.) is set to direct with Pixar regular Bob Peterson on as co-director.

The announcement fills the gap for a full slate of Pixar projects through 2010. Next summer will see the release of Wall-E, about a young robot searching for home sweet home in the vastness of outer space, while 2010 brings the return of Buzz Lightyear, Woody and Co. with Toy Story 3.

Toy Story 3 Trailer Now Online, New Character to Appear in Up

Posted on 2009-05-29 by Rich Z

Pixar has released the first teaser trailer for Toy Story 3, due in June 2010.

Be sure to pay close attention when you see Up this weekend, as it was earlier reported that Pixar will unveil a look at a character from Toy Story 3 somewhere in the movie.

Below, you can see the trailer followed by a fun video that chronicles Pixar's tendency to introduce upcoming characters in its movies. (We find Wall-E's appearance in Toy Story particularly amazing.)

Michael Keaton Voicing Barbie's Ken in Toy Story 3

Posted on 2009-07-26 by Rich Z

Empire Online reports that Michael Keaton will lend his voice talents to Toy Story 3 as Barbie's boyfriend Ken.

The movie's director, Lee Unkrich, made the announcement:

Barbie is back, and this time she plays a bigger role. So naturally we had to bring in her companion Ken this time. And we can announce today that he's voiced by Michael Keaton. He worked with us on Cars, where he voiced the bad guy, and he was a blast to work with so we invited him back as Ken.

Toy Story 3 has a release date of June 18, 2010 and features much of the cast from the other two movies as well as some new additions. Already on board are Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, and Wallace Shawn, among others.

Summer 2010 Preview: 20 Movies We'll Be Talking About Next Year

Posted on 2009-09-03 by reelz

Next summer can be summed up simply: Sequels, remakes, comic book adaptations, and 3-D. Wait a minute, that's how we summed up Summer 2009! And Summer 2008, too (well, except the 3-D part).

While there might not be a whole lot new in the mix, here are the 20 titles we'll be talking about next summer.

Timothy Dalton to Star in Toy Story 3, Cars 2 Plot Details Revealed

Posted on 2009-09-11 by Rich Z

Cars 2Empire is reporting two exciting pieces of news from yesterday's Disney-themed showcase in London. John Lasseter, Pixar's chief creative officer and the director of several of the studio's features, announced that Timothy Dalton will have a role in Toy Story 3. He also discussed several plot details of Cars 2.

Dalton starred in two James Bond movies in the '80s as well as several TV adaptations of 19th-century British novels. You may also remember him as the thin-mustached villain of The Rocketeer. For Toy Story 3, he will play the role of Mr. Pricklepants, a theatrical hedgehog whose role in the story is not quite clear.

Continuing on the Bond theme, Cars 2 will apparently involve a spy subplot. The story's framework involves Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) traveling around the world competing in an international competition. Destinations include Japan, Germany, Italy, France, and the UK. Along the way, Mater gets involved in a case of mistaken identity when he saves the life of a British agent named Finn McMissile. Guess what? According to Empire, McMissile looks like an Aston Martin.

There's no word yet as to who will voice the character, but we agree with Empire: After the announcement about Dalton, it seems appropriate that Pixar would consider other former Bonds for the role, if not Dalton himself.
