...the point to make right now is that even if you're an unregenerate monarchy-hater like me (and I was trained by my Irish Republican father to view the royals as corrupt, subhuman leeches) The King's Speech is both a great night at the movies and a terrific yarn of unexpected human and historical depth.

Let's say it without equivocation: Colin Firth deserves an Oscar...

Because this British film has the contours of an Oscar-friendly Hollywood story (not for nothing is the Weinstein Co. involved), The King's Speech tends to sound more standard than it plays. In fact, several factors, aside from that acting, keep it involving and well above the norm.

The King's Speech is admirably free of easy answers and simple, happy endings; it's a skewed, awards-ready version of history, but one polished to a fine, satisfying shine.

Like many entertainments of this pop-historical type, The King's Speech wears history lightly no matter how heavy the crown.

Straining to elevate its real-life footnote of a tale into a meaningful fable about a man, and nation, "finding their voice," the film manages to spit out merely high-minded sitcom uplift.

Toronto Film Festival Report: The King's Speech with Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush
Posted on 2010-09-10 by reelzIt's not uncommon for Oscar buzz to begin at the Toronto Film Festival — such was the case for Slumdog Millionaire, Precious, Crash, and Hotel Rwanda. This year, one of the movies that's being mentioned as an awards contender is The King's Speech, which tells the story of England's King George VI (Colin Firth) and the speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush) who helped him overcome his impediment. As part of our coverage of the festival, ReelzChannel correspondent Matt Mauro sat down with both actors.
Golden Globes Nominations: Snubs and Snickers
Posted on 2010-12-14 by reelzNominations for the 68th Annual Golden Globes were announced this morning, with The King's Speech getting the most nods (7), followed by The Social Network (6) and The Fighter (6). See the complete list of movie nominations here.
As always, there were snubs — Not a single True Grit nom? No Danny Boyle (127 Hours) in the Best Director category? There were the surprises — Halle Berry's Best Actress nom for a performance most moviegoers have never heard of? The critically panned Burlesque for top comedy or musical? But then there were the surprises that also prompted audible scoffs.
When Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie were announced as contenders for best actor and best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy for The Tourist snorts of disbelief crackled over the airwaves.
Given that last week Vulture was rounding up the craziest review descriptions of Jolie's The Tourist performance, we have to wonder if the nominations were submitted before critic screenings.
